Ultimate Minimalism in the remote interior of Iceland
the ultimate Iceland tour for the adventurous
6-Day Photographic Adventure
This is an extremely adventurous trip into the remote central highlands of Iceland during a time that few enter. The landscape is completely snowed in and the only access is via specially adapted 4WD Nissan Patrols with experienced drivers.
Due to the remoteness of the locations we are photographing, the only option is to stay in the mountain cabins that dot the landscape. These are pleasant places of warmth where we may meet many Icelanders using the place for their annual trip into the centre of the island. But the sleeping arrangements are extremely basic. You need to be comfortable to share an open space with others in your own sleeping bag and mat and also to contribute to helping out with cooking and daily chores where needed.
Getting to the tip
Arriving at Keflavik airport, it is a 40 minute bus transfer (not included) to Reykjavik. Please arrive in Reykjavik before 5pm as we will head out to a local restaurant at 7pm.
6-day ItineraryIn this section I'll give you a break down of what we're doing each day, in terms of location. There's a further section down the page which deals with what to expect as a daily schedule.
Day 1: Arrival in Reykjavik.
Day 2:Transfer & Shooting day.
We leave Reykjavik after breakfast for the short journey (2 hours) to head into the central highlands towards our first mountain cabin. We will stop enroute to photograph the minimalist Icelandic landscape of the central highlands, arriving at our mountain cabin before evening. Sleeping in shared accommodation with sleeping bag and mat / breakfast / packed lunch / evening dinner.
Day 3 & 4: Shooting days.
Each day we will have breakfast in our mountain cabin and head out for the day to shoot in the surrounding landscape of minimalist mountain snowlines, heading back toward the cabin each day for evening dinner. Sleeping in shared accommodation with sleeping bag and mat/ breakfast / packed lunch / evening dinner.
Day 5: Shooting day & Transfer day.
Today we will pack up and leave our last mountain cabin as we make our way out of the central highlands towards the ring road. We will spend most of the journey back out of the highlands to make more minimalist shots of the landscape, arriving back in Reykjaving in the late afternoon. Evening dinner at a local restaurant/ breakfast / packed lunch / evening dinner.
Day 6: Tour finishes after breakfast.
Shared sleeping mountain cabin accommodation
We are staying in mountain cabins for 4 nights. These are pleasant but very basic places with communal bedding arrangements.
You will be sharing an open space, sleeping with others in your own sleeping bag with mat. Due to the remoteness of the locations this is the best option for being in the central highlands for immediate access to the surrounding landscape.
Daily Schedule OutlineEach day will have the following format:
The days are short in March, but this has plenty of benefits. Because the sun is low in the sky all day it means we have beautiful light lasting all day and it's possible to make great photos even at mid day.
