Torres del Paine photo Safari ~ Autumn in Patagonia
April 3 to April 10 2010 In conjunction with Andean Trails the UK's leading South American Adventure Travel Company, I will be conducting a photographic safari in Torres del Paine National Park, Chile during April 2010. Paine National Park, created in 1959, is a paradise for photographers and nature lovers: the fauna, flora and landscapes are unique. Paine means dark blue in the Tehuelche language as it is the colour the mountains become at dawn. Days spent in the park will be filled with breathtaking views of rock spires, snow covered peaks, shimmering glaciers, jewel coloured lakes and sun scorched grasslands dotted with wildflowers. Wildlife abounds here and you share the trail with guanacos, Darwin’s rhea, condors, Chilean flamingos, fox, buff-necked ibis, swans, geese, woodpeckers and even once in a while the elusive South American puma. Our photographic safari takes in some of the highlights of Paine including the Grey glacier, the vivid blue and green Lago Pehoe, and the superb views over the Towers and Horns, central to the massif. The trip will be limited to 8 participants and will take place within the confines of the national park, spending quality time at each location photographing the surrounding landscapes and wildlife. The trip is open to anyone who has a passion for photography. The aim of the trip is to allow each participant quality time at some fabulous locations, with accommodation, food and logistics all taken care of. |

| Itinerary Day 1 Today you will arrive at Punta Arenas airport and in the evening will meet Bruce and the others on the trip at the lovely La Marmita restaraunt where we will have dinner together. We will stay overnight in Punta Arenas. Day 2 This is really a traveling day to get us to Torres del Paine, but on the way we will have lunch in a homely restaruant in the small town of Puerto Natalis, which is situated on the outskirts of the Torres del Paine national Park. By the late afternoon we will have arrived at Hosteria Mirador Payne, situated within the Estancia Lazo. This is a beautiful rustic hotel situated on the very edge of Torres del Paine and commands some exceptional views over Laguna Verde (green lake) towards the Cuernos (Horns) of Payne. Dinner and night in Hosteria Mirador del Payne. Day 3 Sunrise Shoot at Lago Sarmiento. This is one of Bruce's favourite locations with Calcium rocks situated on the shores of Lago Sarmiento, just a short drive away from our accomodation. We will return to Hosterial Mirador del Payne for breakfast and then leave on our days shoot as we enter Torres del Paine national Park. On the way, we will photograph Laguna Armago, a salt lake with commanding views over towards the Towers of Paine. We will also have our first encounters with the Guanaco - a distant relative of the Llama, which tends to stay on the eastern side of the park. We will also venture to look at Mirador Condor del Paine which is a 'secret' view point in the park where it's often possible to see Condors. We will arrive at our hotel situated at the edge of the Turquoise Lago Pehoe in the afternoon. Dinner and night in Hosteria Pehoe. Day 4 Today we are situated in the heart of Torres del Paine at one of the most commanding views in the park - from our hotel we have fantastic vistas of the Paine Massif with Lago Pehoe in the foreground. We will shoot here for sunrise and after breakfast will continue to explore the surrounding area, retreating back to the hotel for our second night here. We have many options including walking the 1 hour hike up to the Mirador Pehoe view which has beautiful views across lago Pehoe. Day 5 We have a second chance this morning of shooting sunrise at Lago Pehoe before breakfast. After breakfast we will continue round to Lago Grey and stop on the way to shoot the park from some less obvious views of Paine Grande and the southern area of the park. Dinner and night in Hosteria Grey Day 6 This morning is really a rest morning. But for those wishing to shoot sunrise, Bruce will be out at the edge of Lago Grey where there are often ice bergs so come and meet him there. After Breakfast we have time to explore the edges of Lago Grey in more detail before our boat trip to Glacier Grey in the early afternoon. The boat trip to Glacier Grey in the afternoon gives us an opportunity to shoot the Glacier from up close and also to photograph some of the calved ice bergs in the surrounding area. Dinner and night in Hosteria Lago Grey Day 7 Today we head out of the Park and back towards Puerto Natalis where we will stop for lunch at one of the local eateries. In the afternoon we will continue on our way back to Punta Arenas where we will have dinner in La Marmita before staying overnight in Punta Arenas. Day 8 Transfer to airport Punta Arenas End of program Extensions This trip coincides with a photographic safari to Bolivia. It is possible for you to do both if you so wish. |
"The Torres del Paine photo workshop/tour was fantastic. Bruce is extremely down-to-earth, humble, and genuine. He is very easy to get along with, and makes people around him very comfortable. The small group size allowed Bruce to spend sufficient time with each person. I only wish the course was longer - Torres del Paine is an amazing location, and I hope to return there some day." Milind Paranjpe, California, USA "Bruce was helpful, he allowed people freedom to do their own thing while helping out whenever someone wanted guidance, and the critiques he did were very helpful. I think its always difficult to keep a group of any size happy but Bruce did a great job, and i think everyone came away happy." David.Sheehan, London "Bruce Percy is a very talented photographer and an enthusiastic leader. Chris and I felt we learned a great deal from him. His critique sessions were valuable as learning tools and it was interesting to see everyone else's photos." Mary Joakim, Toronto, Canada Bruce's photos inspired me to go on the workshop in Torres del Paine, a place I knew next to nothing about. The workshop was well organised - Bruce knows the area well and has scouted out many possibilities for all times of the day, so we got the most we could from our time. The critiques of my day's photos helped me hone my compositions. I definitely felt I learned a lot from Bruce and came away with both an improved technique and a strong collection of photos with fond memories behind them. Niall Connaughton, Australia I can’t imagine a better photo group leader than Bruce. Even though I’ve been on about a dozen photo tours all over the world, Bruce is by far the best. Of course he knows his photography and takes beautiful pictures that inspire us continually. More importantly, he gets us to those same locations at the right time of day so we can try our hand at emulating his success. He knows the area thoroughly, updates his information by asking questions of locals throughout the trip, and is ready to quickly shift gears if the weather or some other condition dictates a better photo location. Bruce is extremely responsive to the wishes of the group and each individual in it. He climbs all over the mountain to spend time with each of us, recommending other locations if he thinks we would benefit from moving. Not to rely on generalities, he literally looks through the lens regularly to see how we are framing a shot and to offer helpful hints. Later when shooting is over, he welcomes the opportunity to go over our photos and offer advice. His attention to detail doesn’t stop at photography. The trip ran like clockwork because he was careful to make sure that all logistical elements were not only properly arranged but double-checked at the final moment. Bruce is not only a great photography tour leader but a great guylots of fun with many stories and lively conversation. Roger Pool, New York |
