The nearest airport is in Stornoway. Flights can be booked through FlyBe from Glasgow to Stornoway.

Airport Pick Up

I will pick everyone up at Stornoway Airport at 4pm on the day the trip commences.

Airport Drop Off

I will drop everyone off at Stornoway airport no later than 11am on the final day of the workshop. Please arrange your connections to coincide with this.

For flight schedules, please refer to the
FlyBe web site

Ferry

Caledonian MacBrayne offer daily sailings to Tarbert from Uig on Skye and also to Stornoway from Ullapool.

During November, it is a bit of a gamble to book the ferry and expect it to run. There are often cancellations due to storms at sea so please arrange to travel with sufficient time for cancellations.
Start/Finish: The course starts at 6pm on Friday and finishes at on Wednesday morning after breakfast.
Deposit: £200 per person
Group size: Maximum 8 photographers
Fitness level: Very easy access to locations. Some beach walking required.

Where we stay: Harris Hotel, Tarbert

Trip Details

Harris is a stunningly beautiful island, situated in the far north of Scotland. It is part of the outer Hebrides.

As part of the trip, we will venture onto Lewis to photograph the Calanais stones for sunset.

This trip is set up to maximise our time during dawn and sunset. These are after all the magic hours and where most great photographic images are created.

Arrival & Introduction

12:00

We will meet at the airport in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, where we will go by mini bus to our accomodation in Harris (1 hour) where we will be staying at the lovely Harris Hotel in Tarbert for our entire stay.

7:00 - 8:00pm
Dinner

8:00 - 9:00pm
I will present a talk on my approaches to landscape photography.

November Daily Schedule

In November, days are short, but this has its advantages: no early morning starts, and no late evenings. Easier on the body clock. The sun never gets too high in the sky either, thus producing some really stunning light.

7:00 - 9:00am
Many of the scienic locations on Harris are in the south of the Island. We have many beaches and also some very rugged scenery to photograph, so we will be heading out each morning in search of one of the many fine locations on the island.

9:00 - 10:00am
Breakfast. Back to the hotel for some food and wamth before taking an hour out of our schedule to relax, have a shower, take a rest.

10:00 - 12:00pm
Critique session & digital workflow. We will select two shots from each member to discuss and I will show you how the image may be improved and the steps involved from RAW file to final print.

12:00 - 3:00pm
The light can be stunning on Harris at any time of year. Dramatic weather can really add to the locations and each afternoon we will revisit some of the locations we shot during the special morning light.

3:00 - 5:00pm
On location for sunset.

7:00 - 8:00pm
Dinner

May Daily Schedule

The days are long in May. This makes it very hard for morning photography so this trip has been designed to take advantage of the long evenings, shooting till late but has the advantage of a decent sleep. We'll spend two to three hours a day doing critiques and there'll be plenty of free time too, for you to do what you want on your own.

9:00 - 10:00am
Breakfast.

10:00am - 12:00pm
Free time.

12:00 - 3:00pm
Critique session & digital workflow. We will select two shots from each member to discuss and I will show you how the image may be improved and the steps involved from RAW file to final print.

6:30pm - 7:30pm
Dinner

7:30pm - 11:30pm
On location for sunset. The evening light tends to go on and on, giving us plenty of time to capture some golden evening summer light.
