Support Mavisbank House Stripped by fire in 1973, Mavisbank was once a beautiful country house situated in an impressively designed landscape. It is architecturally renowned as one of the country's earliest neo-classic houses as well as the very first Palladian villa to be built in Scotland. I first became aware of Mavisbank through the BBC television series ‘Restoration’ and later the Edinburgh Greenbelt Trust; who are working towards restoring the house and its grounds for recreational use. Britain has a deep history, represented by a rich collection of historically significant buildings and monuments. We are however losing many of these buildings, due to lack of awareness. To my mind, it is a crime that we should lose items that are unique, irreplaceable, and are a part of our heritage. |

| Visiting other countries such as the United States of America and Australia, I have been made to realise the significance of our architectural past. Buildings that we in the UK would think nothing of are given high protection status abroad; where it is not uncommon to find buildings built as recently as the 20th century given heritage status. If you would like any further information about the campaign to restore Mavisbank or would like to become involved in the project, please visit the The Edinburgh Greenbelt Trust web site for more information or alternatively contact Liz Stewart on 0131 654 1933 or email liz@egbt.org.uk |
