iBooks

Things are moving swiftly, and I should have my eBooks up on Apple’s iBooks store soon.

In the meantime, here are a few snaps showing you the eBooks on the iPad.

Simplifying Composition on iBooks

  1. Hi Bruce,

That looks really good. I’m using iBooks on my iphone with a couple of your pdf versions loaded, but curiously one of them doesn’t display any images. The Visual Sense displays perfectly, but Simplifying Composition has white blanks where the images should be – I guess the image format/compression must be different. I’m not worried about it as they both display correctly on the MacBook.

The images above on the iPad do look rather nice!

Hopefully this will prove to be a successful market for you,

    Jonathan

  2. Hi Jon,

The iphone and iPad OS is buggy and has a bug with displaying compressed images. I’ve gone back over my ebooks to re-do them so I can get round the issue. I’ll check the transactions and email you replacement copies that will work on the iPhone.

  3. Thanks Bruce, I wondered if it might be something like that. Just playing with my new iphone – the higher res display makes the text in your books look really nice, a bit small perhaps for my eyes now but still great inspiration for when I’m stuck in the office :-)

  4. Hi Jon; I had the same problem with one of the eBooks. To fix, I opened the PDF in Preview (on the Mac) and then saved it with a different file name. This cured the problem, so it is something to do with the way the original PDF has been created.

  5. Hi Phil,

That’s actually incorrect. It has nothing to do with the way the PDF was created. It’s to do with a bug on the iPhone OS which does not allow compressed jpegs to be viewed on either the iPad or iPhone.

If you look at GoodReaders documentation it covers this.

I’ve since modified my eBooks so that the jpegs aren’t compressed (which is annoying to be honest). So if anyone is having problems, let me know and I’ll send them replacement PDF’s.

The problem was fixed a month or so ago, so most recent buyers shouldn’t have a problem.

  6. We could of course ask mighty-Apple to fix it, which would then mean I wound’t have to cludge around the fact that their dodgy OS doesn’t support PDF’s correctly.

I’ve been amazed at peoples reactions to PDF’s not working on the iPad correctly. As if it’s Adobe’s fault, or the creator of the PDF’s. Never does anyone assume that Apple creates buggy software.

  7. Hi Bruce,

Well I suppose it is to do with the way the PDF was created; as it used compressed images :-) But I agree; it isn’t a creation error, but a limitation / bug with the iPhone / iPad OS.

Sorry if it sounded I was blaming you – wasn’t what I was meaning

  8. Hi Phil,

I didn’t take it that way, so I’m cool about it.

I just wish the apple stuff was 100 percent compliant, but it’s not.

  10. Bruce, I am really enjoying your ebooks on my iPad – they are stunning!
Would you tell us what case you are using on the iPad in the photo?
    Thanks!

  11. Hi Anita,

Really pleased you’re enjoying the ebooks on the ipad. I think the PDF’s work really nicely in Goodreader – have you got the updated version which allows you to view two pages side by side?

The case I have for my iPad is made by InCase. It’s nice because it has a little leather tongue built in which allows me to step the iPad at an angle for easier use. I feel the iPad is just this ‘thing’ that I don’t quite know how to sit comfortably with. So it really needs a case that allows it to be set at an angle.

  12. Bruce, I really like Goodreader too, especially since the update :)
Thanks for your comment about the case. I understand what you mean about the iPad, I find myself propping mine up on a pillow. I see photographers talking about the potential to use the iPad on location, but I’m still babying mine. I’ve read outside beside the pool, but other than that, I haven’t really taken it outdoors too much. Have you?

  13. Hi Anita,

I bought my iPad for a few things. I wanted to make sure I could get all my eBooks working on it, and I’ve also got a few other things in the pipeline for it as well.

Other than that, yes, I’m hoping to use it for my Workshops. I specifically like the Photographer’s Ephemeris application – it’s a great tool for showing you where the sun will rise and set and sunrise / sunset times. So I hope to use the iPad for that while I’m away on location (network coverage permitting).

I think version 1 of the iPad is nice, but I think it’s going to evolve quite a bit. It’s a bit too ‘green’ at the moment. Well, that’s my opinion. But I feel it has a great future and what we will do with it – is going to be interesting. Despite some folks thinking it’s just a big iPhone! :-)
